Well, I was about to switch to Damn Small Linux, but couldn't stand its extension mechanism. So I've returned to Debian one. It is great, actually :)!

Try slind (http://www.slind.org). It has just about enough packages for an x-terminal machine.

Thanks :)! I'll look into it. But the problem is I don't need an X-terminal. I need a MIDI-terminal ;)

Well, looks very promising :)! And I like the idea :) Congratulations on a job well done :)!
But it doesn't seem to have any ready-and-simple-to-use tools to produce a Live CD. And I don't have much free time for that.

Because it must be a quick project to produce standalone MIDI synthesizer box for my friend :) It must be very cheap (less than 1000 roubles), robust (think power loss) and quiet (think slow fans and no HDD). Oh, and don't forget easily upgradeable :)

My average soundfont bank is around 20mb. With linux kernel, timidity and quite some I/O to do, you've little chance. :)

Anyway, to speed things up I've switched to Pentium MMX 166 / 96 Mb :)

К сожалению, их у меня никогда не было :( Я даже не знал что они существуют :) Я последнее время мало участвую в развитии драйвера.

Ну и плюс к тому, мне надо образ системы готовить, чтобы его много куда накатывать.
У меня "на обслуживании" 4 компьютера дома и с десяток на работе - предпочитаю с компиляцией чего-либо вообще дела не иметь, по возможности :)

Кстати, возможно Bruce Guenter возмется сделать то, что я так долго собирался сделать: переместить трансляцию кривущего протокола используемого этими планшетами в ядро, где ей и место. Он недавно написал мне, что купил Genius MousePen 8x6 (такой же как у меня) жене и его не устраивает отсутствие поддержки hot-plugging. Я ему только что отправил описание деталей кривизны протокола :) Это даст полную совместимость с любым свежим X.org'ом посредством драйвера evdev :)

Да, а что, много у вас этих планшетов?

Нет, планшетов всего два :)
Использую на всех четырёх компьютерах дома и на одном на работе.
Но мне надо, чтобы дистрибутив был один и источник обновлений - тоже один. Ситуация, когда на каждом компе - свой набор пакетов, которые отдельно обновляются из интернета, при наших ценах за трафик меня категорически не устраивает - дешевле винду получается купить :)
Потому и стараюсь всё зафигачить в пакеты, которые потом можно добавить в репозиторий (использую для этого AptOnCD).

Было бы круто, если бы добавили в ядро.
Где бы следить за прогрессом в этой области? Только на kernel.org?
